Skyrail vs Scenic Railway — Which is Better?

Two world-class ways to reach Kuranda. Here's the honest comparison — views, experience, families, and our recommendation.

Skyrail gondola gliding over Kuranda rainforest canopy

The Honest Answer

Both are genuinely world-class — but they're different experiences. Skyrail wins for aerial views and photography. The Scenic Railway wins for atmosphere, history and those who love trains. Most visitors who do both say they're glad they did.

Tropic Wings' Grand Kuranda and Classic Kuranda tours include both — up on one, back on the other. You don't have to choose. But if you're trying to decide, here's a clear breakdown of each.

About Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Skyrail is a 7.5km gondola cableway that glides over an unbroken canopy of World Heritage-listed rainforest between Smithfield (north of Cairns) and Kuranda village. It's one of the most remarkable aerial experiences in Australia.

  • 7.5km gondola over unbroken World Heritage rainforest canopy
  • Departs from Smithfield terminal, approximately 15 minutes north of Cairns CBD
  • Midway stop at Barron Gorge station — includes a rainforest boardwalk walk to the Barron Falls lookout
  • On clear mornings, views extend across the Coral Sea and back to Cairns
  • Approximately 90 minutes each way, including the midway stop
  • Operates from 8am daily

Skyrail is ideal for: Photography enthusiasts, families with young children, those who want the "wow" aerial moment, and anyone who responds to a bird's-eye perspective on the natural world.

About the Kuranda Scenic Railway

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of Australia's great heritage journeys — a working railway built by hand between 1886 and 1891 through some of the most rugged terrain in Queensland. Over 1,500 workers hand-carved 15 tunnels and constructed 40 bridges through dense rainforest to connect Cairns with the Atherton Tablelands.

  • Departs from Cairns Central station in the heart of the city
  • Journey takes approximately 90 minutes each way
  • 15 hand-carved tunnels and 40 bridges, all built by hand in the 1880s–90s
  • Stops at Barron Falls lookout — spectacular after rain
  • Open-air viewing carriages and enclosed heritage carriages available
  • Gold Class upgrade available with panoramic windows and complimentary snacks

The Scenic Railway is ideal for: Train enthusiasts, history lovers, those who prefer a seated ground-level journey, and anyone who appreciates engineering marvels.

Which is Better for Families?

Both experiences work well for families — but each has a different character.

Skyrail's enclosed gondolas are very safe for young children. There's no risk of falling, the gondola is stable, and the views are genuinely thrilling for small people looking down on rainforest canopy. Young children typically love the sensation of floating above the trees.

The Scenic Railway has open-air viewing sections that older children and teenagers love. The tunnels, bridges and the sheer age of the railway are great talking points for kids with a curiosity about history and engineering.

On Tropic Wings tours, children under five are most comfortable on Skyrail. Families with children aged 6–12 tend to enjoy both equally — another reason to do both in one day.

Can You Do Both in One Day?

Yes — and this is what the vast majority of Tropic Wings guests do. Our Grand Kuranda and Classic Kuranda tours travel up to Kuranda on one and return on the other, giving you both experiences in a single day without any extra planning or transport logistics.

Most guests go up on Skyrail in the morning (when skies are clearest) and return via the Scenic Railway in the afternoon. Between those two iconic journeys, you have Rainforestation Nature Park — Army Duck, Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience and the Wildlife Park — plus free time in the village.

You don't have to choose. The whole point of a guided Tropic Wings day is to include both.

Which Does Tropic Wings Recommend?

Here's our honest take:

  • If you can only do one: Choose Skyrail for the views — especially on a clear morning. The aerial perspective over unbroken rainforest canopy is one of those rare moments that stays with you.
  • If you're a history or train enthusiast: The Scenic Railway is one of Australia's genuinely great heritage rail journeys. Do this one.
  • If cost isn't a constraint: Do both. This is why our Grand Kuranda and Classic Kuranda tours are our most popular — they remove the need to choose.
