The Three Ways to Get to Kuranda

Kuranda is a rainforest village in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics, about 25km northwest of Cairns as the crow flies (but much further by road, which winds up and over the Macalister Range). You have three realistic options:

1. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway — gondola over the rainforest canopy from Smithfield (north of Cairns CBD)
2. Kuranda Scenic Railway — heritage steam-era train from Cairns Central station through hand-carved tunnels and past waterfalls
3. Drive yourself — via the Kennedy Highway, approximately 30 minutes each way

Most visitors who come with a tour company travel up on one and return on the other — which is by far the best way to experience Kuranda.

Option 1: Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Skyrail runs 7.5 kilometres over an unbroken canopy of ancient rainforest from the Smithfield terminal (15 minutes north of Cairns CBD) up to Kuranda village. The gondolas hold up to 8 people and travel silently — no engine noise, just bird calls and the rustling of the canopy 10–15 metres below.

There's a mid-point stop at Barron Falls station where you can get out and walk to lookout platforms over the Barron Gorge and falls — spectacular after rain. Red Peak station (the other mid-point stop) features elevated boardwalks through the rainforest canopy.

• Journey time: approximately 1.5 hours Smithfield to Kuranda including stops
• Operating hours: 8:00am–5:30pm daily (last gondola ~3:30pm to Kuranda)
• Maintenance closure: approximately July–October each year (varies)
• Not suitable for: guests with a fear of heights or enclosed spaces

Skyrail verdict: Best for aerial views, photography, and the wow-factor. Clear days deliver views all the way to the Coral Sea.

Option 2: Kuranda Scenic Railway

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is one of Australia's great heritage rail journeys. The line was hand-built in the 1880s by thousands of labourers working through dense rainforest, steep gorges, and solid rock — a remarkable feat of engineering that resulted in 15 hand-carved tunnels and 40 bridges.

The train departs from Cairns Central station (beside Cairns Central Shopping Centre), climbs steadily through lowland rainforest, then ascends through the Barron Gorge — with spectacular views of Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls from open-sided carriages.

Scenic Railway practical details

• Departs from: Cairns Central station (Bunda St, Cairns City)
• Departure times: 8:30am and 9:30am daily (check current timetable)
• Journey time: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to Kuranda
• Return departures from Kuranda: 2:00pm and 3:30pm
• Class options: Scenic Class (panoramic windows) and Gold Class (wider seats, commentary, light refreshments)

Railway verdict: Best for atmosphere, heritage buffs, and anyone who loves trains. The open-sided sections let you feel the cool rainforest air as the train climbs through tunnels and alongside waterfalls.

Option 3: Drive Yourself

The drive from Cairns to Kuranda takes approximately 30 minutes via the Kennedy Highway. The road winds up and through the rainforest, and it's an enjoyable drive in its own right — but you'll miss the Skyrail views and the Railway atmosphere entirely.

Free parking is available in the village. If you're travelling with very young children who struggle with heights or enclosed spaces, or if Skyrail is closed for maintenance, driving may be the right call. Otherwise, the journey to Kuranda is genuinely part of the experience — skipping both transport options is a widely shared regret among visitors who drove themselves.

What Most Visitors Do — Up on One, Back on the Other

Is There a Bus from Cairns to Kuranda?

There is no regular public bus service between Cairns CBD and Kuranda village. The Translink network does not connect the two. Your realistic options are Skyrail, the Scenic Railway, a guided tour (which includes hotel pickup and transport), or driving yourself.
