Waterfalls: Millaa Millaa, Zillie & Ellinjaa
The Tablelands Waterfall Circuit is one of the most rewarding 16km drives in Australia. The three main falls — Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa — each have a distinct character and can be visited in a single loop in under two hours.
Millaa Millaa Falls is the most photographed waterfall in Queensland: a perfect curtain of water dropping into a circular, fern-lined swimming hole. The falls are at their most powerful from January to April, when the wet season fills the creeks — but they run year-round. Swimming in the falls pool is magical.
Zillie Falls drops into a narrow gorge and can be viewed from a lookout directly above, giving an unusual perspective looking down into the mist. Ellinjaa Falls is a series of cascades over ancient volcanic basalt — quieter and more contemplative, with a short rainforest walk to the viewing area.

Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine — Volcanic Crater Lakes
Lake Eacham and Lake Barrine are twin volcanic crater lakes sitting within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Both formed around 10,000 years ago when volcanic activity collapsed two ancient craters, which gradually filled with rainforest runoff to create extraordinarily clear, deep lakes.
Lake Eacham is the more accessible — a 3km walking track circles the lake through World Heritage rainforest, with swimming possible at the designated areas. The water is crystal-clear and surprisingly warm for mountain lake water. Freshwater turtles surface regularly near the shore.
Lake Barrine is ringed by enormous twin kauri pines — two ancient trees side-by-side on the lake shore, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. A teahouse on the lake shore has been serving scones to visitors since the 1920s. A short cruise on the lake is available and worth taking.

Wildlife: Platypus, Tree Kangaroos & Ringtails
The Atherton Tablelands has some of the best wildlife viewing in Australia. The town of Yungaburra has a dedicated platypus viewing area at Peterson Creek — one of the most reliable places in the country to see wild platypus. They are regularly observed here in early morning and late afternoon, swimming and diving in the clear creek water. Seeing a wild platypus for the first time is genuinely exciting — they are as strange and remarkable as their reputation suggests.
The tablelands are home to the Lumholtz's tree kangaroo — an arboreal kangaroo found only in the Wet Tropics, almost nowhere else on Earth. They're nocturnal but sometimes visible in daylight in the rainforest near Malanda and Yungaburra. Green ringtail possums, Boyd's forest dragons, and musky rat-kangaroos are also found here.
